A little known fact about me is that unless I am referring to specific albums by Richard Pryor, I don’t use a particular word that starts with the letter N. I’m not saying that I have never used it, but even when I was younger, there were other words I would prefer to use.

My friends and I were more likely to call each other “motherfucker” than the other word. However, we mostly called each other “man”, if we weren’t using our names. To this day, I will use the word “man” more times in one conversation than I have used the other word in the past decade.

Recently I mentioned my rules for creating on Twitter. I have them written in a notebook, but I don’t think I have ever stated them on a podcast or put them in a blog post.

Remember that these rules apply to me and don’t reflect how I see what other people do.

Don’t overthink a project, just do it.

Do your best, despite what others might think.

No one cares about your stuff like you do. Don’t expect them to.

If you don’t like it, don’t release it.

Act as if your stuff is the best there ever was and ever will be. If it isn’t, don’t admit there is anything better.

There are others, but they are more situational (‘”write when you have to, but otherwise speak”) or extremely common sense (“If you don’t know something, either learn it or find somebody who can answer your questions”).

Maybe I’m missing something, but I get the impression that a lot of people don’t realize that apathy is not the same as negativity. There is a big difference between saying “I don’t care about that” and “I don’t like that.” It is very possible to look at a situation or circumstance that makes other people happy or sad and come away thinking “I don’t care about that.” However, to some, if you verbalize that apathy, you are saying “I don’t like that.”

There will be people who won’t care about this post and there will be people who don’t like it. I won’t get bent out of shape because I can tell the difference.

I know that I have blogged about this before, but I have to say it again. No matter how bad things are, they can always get worse.

For example, my ankle has been hurting for the past several hours. When I got home, I took off my shoe and the sharp pain in my ankle has turned into a relentless throbbing pain that feels like it will never stop.

A part of me can help but wonder if my ankle would feel better if I had just left the shoe on.

Ouch.
