My thoughts on “Radical Obama”

I read in a thread on right wing Facebook page that President Obama is a socialist with ill intent towards the United States of America. This isn’t a direct quote because for some reason, right wingers call it “the country” or “our country”, instead of being proud of being from the United States of America.

One of the people in the thread kept saying that Obama’s brand of liberalism doesn’t work. I agree with them. That’s because Obama’s brand of liberalism is actually moderate conservatism. If he was really the firebrand liberal that a lot of people try to paint him as he would have come in with a strong progressive agenda and negotiated down to a soft liberal one. The reason he didn’t do so is because I believe he was afraid it might have worked.

So instead of drastic change, we get mild refinement. Of course the right wing entertainment complex makes more money off of the image of the “angry black radical leftist Obama” than they would if people realized that he is willing to give the right most of what they want.

I see him, in many ways, as a Rorschach blot…people who look at him and see “Angry black man” see ALL black men as angry, as Obama’s public temperament has been cool, calm, almost zen-like while those who oppose him get worked up to the point of yelling and screaming in public.

In a long discussion with a friend, I compared him to Jackie Robinson…the perfect temperament for his role. He doesn’t get mad, he doesn’t match anger for anger, he simply keeps calm and does the job. If he reacted with ANY sort of rage, they could hang every bad thing they feel about him on a slight outburst.

As for socialist…the man is pretty much center-right in all of his dealings. He’s to the right of Clinton (who was a centrist)…but then, in the US, if you aren’t a right wing extremist who worships Ayn Rand, people will call you a commie.

I totally agree with the Jackie Robinson comparison, especially since it is one that I have made myself. A lot of people don’t even realize that Jackie wasn’t the best player in the Negro Leagues, but Branch Rickey felt as though he was the least likely to lose this temper and mess up what he was trying to do. I have to wonder how differently the history of baseball would have been if Cool Papa Bell, Buck Leonard, Josh Gibson, or Satchel Paige had been the one to break the color barrier.

Since President Obama doesn’t have to worry about getting re-elected, I wonder if his disposition will change in his second term.
